Legendary television presenter Don Lane has died in Sydney at the age of 75. American-born Lane became a household name in Australia through The Don Lane Show . Lane was originally hired to fill in at Channel Nine for six weeks. He went on to become one of the country's most popular stars and at one time was the highest paid person on Australian television.I thought I should post this album in memorium as I have some great memories of watching Don throught the 9 years that his show ran.
Although not thought of as a great singer this album has some merit the songs on the album suit his vocals, another album I hadn't listened to until I ripped it and I liked it . Don recorded a number of albums and singles the best known being "You're Everything" released in 1969 and can be found here on Tom Mix's blog
and the album on Ozzie Musicman's site
Well I'll be buggered just noticed that this album is the same album as Ozzie's released 3 years earlier with different artwork minus the single which Ozzie's has, should have ripped the other album I have Oh Well.
For those that already have Ozzie Musicman's album here is my Artwork

Master's Apprentices - Choice Cuts

Rio De Camero/Michael/Easy To Lie/Because I Love You/Catty/Our Friend Owsley Stanley III/Death Of A King/Song For A Lost Gypsy/ I'm Your Satisfier/Song For Joey Part II

The Masters Apprentices were an Australian rock band fronted by mainstay Jim Keays on lead vocals, which formed in 1965 in Adelaide, South Australia, relocated to Melbourne in February 1967 and attempted to break into the United Kingdom market from 1970, before disbanding in 1972. Their popular Australian singles are "Undecided", "Living in a Child's Dream", "5:10 Man", "Think About Tomorrow Today", "Turn Up Your Radio" and "Because I Love You".

Easily one of the best Austrlalian albums of the seventies had the Masters not been an Australian band and been perhaps an English band I'm sure that this would have been huge overseas. The band cites one of the reasons for it not being a hit in the UK as distance they recorded the album in England returned home found out the album was getting airplay and by the time they were able to get back there the momentum was gone. The Master's Apprentices were and still are one of the great Australian Bands.

Aztec have re-released the first album and you can get it here so do yourself a favour and go out and buy it.

He scored a try for the Tigers in their winning grand final in 1939, and captained NSW in the same year.He was captain-coach of North Sydney the last time they reached the grand final in 1943, but they were well beaten by his original club Newtown.Hyde began his radio career in 1953, calling games into a microphone set up on a card table on the sidelines. He called 31 consecutive seasons for Sydney radio station 2SM without ever being beaten in the ratings. His catch cry of "It's long enough, it's high enough and it's straight between the posts" became part of the fabric of the game."Frank Hyde was the voice of the game for so many people," NRL chief executive David Gallop said."The technology has changed a lot since, along with the way the game is played, but Frank's ability to make people feel part of the action through his calls is one of his great legacies."ARL chief executive Geoff Carr described Hyde as a great gentleman."Frank charmed everyone and he was one of the best judges of the game you could ever talk to."His influence was enormous and there are generations of fans who, every time they watch a goal being kicked, to this day hear in their mind the words 'it's long enough, it's high enough ...'."Hyde retired as a player in 1945 but continued coaching and became a qualified referee.Although the Second World War robbed him of the chance of playing for Australia, Hyde led Kangaroos supporters tours and was always invited to reunion dinners. He charmed people with his stories and renditions of Irish songs. He made a recording of Danny Boy which made it into the top 10 in the 1970s.A devout Catholic throughout his life, Hyde is survived by six children, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.Gaby, his wife of 64 years, died earlier this year.He was awarded an MBE, an OAM, and the Dally M Life Achievement award.Last year he was inducted into the radio hall of fame.Rugby league remained his passion throughout his life. In 1995 he said: "In its modern dress or its old, it is a fine, fine game - the best of all, I reckon, played by men with a ball in their hands."NSW Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell has described late rugby league broadcaster Frank Hyde as an icon."(He was) just an extraordinary icon", Mr O'Farrell told reporters in Sydney."For those of us who remember growing up listening to rugby league before the days of great television telecasts, radio descriptions were important, and no-one did them better than Frank Hyde."

Mr. Lee Grant - Mr. Lee Grant

Havah Nagilah/You Can Have Her/ The Real Thing/Some Kina Magic/Coloured Lights/Opportunity/Yo Yo/Take My Hand/Love/The Coalman/Spicks And Specks/Thanks To You
Mr. Lee Grant Kiwi superstar of the late sixties didn't make much of an impression here in OZ but was huge over there The Mr. may seem a bit pretentious but that was added to avoid confusion with a local actress with the same name. The album which I had never heard before was quite good .
A special thanks to Rex for sending me this album.
The opening track "Hava Nagilah" I thought was a strange choice until I read that he was born Bogdan Charis Kominowski to Polish parents on April 22 1945, in a Nazi concentration camp just outside Dusseldorf. His father was killed, but he and his mother survived and emigrated to New Zealand in 1949, settling in Palmerston North chilling stuff. The song "The Real Thing" not the Russell Morris hit is probably my Fave followed by the 2 Bee Gees covers Ronnie Burn's hit "Coalman" and the Bee Gee's first big hit "Spicks And Specks".
