Syrius - Live On GTK

I've Grown Tired Already/Manic Depression/No Use To Cry Baby/Dedication to Roland Kirk/Hell/Strawberry Fields/Dream About The Dance Of The Flowers/All Right Now/Smiling Phases/GTK Interview 1971

Syrius toured here in Australia during 1970 through to 1971 a long tour they were here for about a year and became an honorary Aussie band they recorded while they were here coming up with the excellent "Devil's Masquerade" released here and in Hungary. They made a number of appearances on GTK and hopefully I've compiled them all here. As far as know the last two tracks were also recorded here but I have no real evidence as to their authenticity only the uploaders say so.

Jackie Orszaczky was the bass player for the band and after the band returned to Hungary he was to return to OZ in 1974 Orszaczky joined experimental group Bakery. He then established a career as a leading musician in the front rank of much of the best jazz, soul, funk and rhythm & blues music created in Australia in the 1970s to the 2000s. He also continued to tour in Hungary, and continued to command crowds of 3,000 to 30,000 people at his annual Budapest concerts.

Orszaczky performed with various groups: The Grandmasters, with partner Tina Harrod; Jump Back Jack; the Godmothers; The Orszaczky Budget Orchestra; and, the Jackie Orszaczky Band.

He was musical director and arranger for the Marcia Hines, and wrote arrangements and orchestrations for The Whitlams, You Am I, Hoodoo Gurus, Tim Finn, Savage Garden, Hoodoo Gurus, Grinspoon and Leonardo's Bride. He also collaborated with Tony Buck, Chris Abrahams, Andrew Robson.

Judy Stone - Hard To Say Goodnight

Hard To Say Goodnight/Too Much

In the early 60's a young girl who aspired to be a country music singer dressed up in all the white leather fineries etc., and made many appearances on country shows around Sydney. This market was a very small market and virtually controlled by other artists such as Reg Lindsay, Slim Dusty, Joy and Heather McKeon their respective wives as well as a few others such as Bill Kelly, Tim and Tom MacNamara etc. Judy was much younger and didn't have much of a chance with the small amount of country music that Sydney audiences wanted at that time..

She moved slowly over to the more popular rock style of country that was now beginning to chart in the Top 40 and after a few appearances on Bandstand etc., became one of the 'Darlings' of Australian TV. That as wel las her record successes cement her place in Rock 'n' Roll history.

Her songs include 'I'll Step Down', 'Would you lay with me in a Field of Stone', '4,003,221 Tears from now', 'Born a Woman', 'Mare Mare Mare', 'Day by Day', 'Hasta Manana' and others.
Over a few years she became the 'Golden Girl' of Bandstand and was paired off with Col Joye. They recorded and did many shows together however that was where the 'pairing' ended. Judy married Leo De Kroo of The De Kroo Bros but this only lasted a year or two.
She still performs today however due to medical problems she keeps this to a minimum. She is still very popular with her fans and her contribution to OZ Rock is clearly defined.

John Kane was a founding member and songwriter for the Flying Emus, one of Australian country music’s premier vocal and instrumental bands

John Kane is one of the best flat pickers in Australia as "Take Your Pick" his solo debut proves. The accent predictably is on bluegrass and country blues. Kane has some impressive support on the album from Dave Ellis and Lloyd Swanton on acoustic bass Mick Kerin on fiddle Ian Simpson on banjo and american guitarist Dan Cary. Chris Duffy one half of the Chris Duffy-John Kane Duo produced the album and appears on nine of the tracks playing the mandolin.

Thanks to RAM for the rip of the album there is a 320kbps rip in the header and a flac version HERE

Alison McCallum - Love Grows Cold

Love Grows Cold/Lunatic Love Part II

Alison McCallum's pop/rock music career began when, at the age of 16, she joined the Big Apple Union, a soul, blues and Tamla Motown influenced band gigging around Sydney's inner city/Oxford Street area in 1967. This band seems to have evolved into Dr Kandy's Third Eye, where she shared lead vocal chores with the enigmatic Gulliver Smith (Little Gulliver). The combination of Smith's Dylanesque vocals and McCallum's soulful voice made an interesting contrast. Considered to be an "underground" band they were one of the first to use strobe lighting and smoke to create a psychedelic atmosphere at their gigs. In June 1969 she joined the seven piece blue eyed soul band, This Hallelujah Chorus, once again doing shared lead vocals in the lineup with a male vocalist, Ed Mayne. This Hallelujah Chorus played the clubs of Sydney's Kings Cross, a scene much frequented in that time by American servicemen on R and R from Vietnam. It was also during 1969 she recorded a version of The Bee Gees song "To Love Somebody" with art-rock psychedelic band, Tully, for the ABC-TV show "Fusions", however this was not be released commercially until 1979 on the Alberts compilation "Alberts Archives".

At the end of 1970 she joined Freshwater, a progressive band, who prior to her joining had achieved a certain level of notoriety with their controversial single "Satan", a song about the horrific US Sharon Tate murders. Originally sharing lead vocals with the powerful male vocals of Ian Johnson, by September 1971 she was sole lead vocalist. In November 1971, saw the issue of her first recorded release with her lead vocals on the bands final single, the rocky "I Ain't Got The Time", a track that saw some success on the Sydney charts and was to give her much wider public exposure. With the demise of Freshwater in November 1971 she briefly joined singer Ray Brown's band, One Ton Gypsy before going solo in early 1972.

In April 1972 her first solo single "Superman" was released on RCA and this was an immediate success going to No.12 on the Australian national charts. This single was flipped with a Ted Mulry composition "Take Me Back". She followed this up with her first album called "Fresh Water", a title chosen presumably to focus in on her success with her former band of that name. This album was produced by the well known (The Yardbirds, T-Rex) UK producer Simon Napier-Bell and included a mix of rock, jazz and blues material. This album was later re-released under a different title "Anyway You Want Me". Following this the Pat Aulton produced and co-written single, "It's Time" was released. In 1973 she travelled to Europe to perform and whilst there showcased "Superman" at the 8th MIDEM International Music Trade Fair at Cannes. She released a further 3 singles on RCA, including a version of the Rotary Connection song "Teach Me How To Fly" which had previously been a hit by Jeff St John in 1970. None of these singles were successful. In October 1974 she got together with fellow sister vocalists Bobbi Marchini and Janice Slater to put out a single as The Hooter Sisters, the old Carole King song,"To Know Him Is To Love Him".

In 1975 she signed a new record deal with Albert Productions and this resulted in her second and final hit single "Excuse Me", a track which managed to clinge to the bottom of the Top 30 for am amazing 42 weeks.. This was followed by an album of the same name, "Excuse Me" which included two Vanda/Young songs and a version of the Flying Burrito Brothers song "Hot Burrito". Two more last singles, albeit unsuccessful, followed this "Her Kind of Guy (Hot Burrito)"/"If Your Eyes Could Smile" and "Love Grows Cold"/"Lunatic Love" posted here . In the late 1970's she concentrated on TV & session work in particular doing backing vocals on guitarist John Robinson's "Pity for the Victim" album and with artists such as Billy Thorpe and Jeff St John.

Marty Rhone - Ruby With The Red Hair

Ruby With The Red Hair/Appeal

Released in July 1969, this was not a huge success but it charted moderately in Victoria and Queensland, may have been the length of the song that put people off. When I first heard this song I was immediately taken by it and went out and bought it straight away, this was going to be such a huge hit, not the first time I've been wrong. But for me this is one of my all time favourite singles of the sixties as both sides are fantastic plenty of other great singles from that period but not to many with two strong sides. A side is written by Marty the B side by Terry Britten of the Twilights who was just starting to come into his own as a songwriter.

The Seekers - The Seekers

Sparrow Song/Goodbye Again/Please Come To Boston/Sweet Surrender/Freedom/A Never Ending Song/ I Have To Say I Love You In A Song/Sweet Sympathy/Can We Learn To Get Along/Break These Chains/Every Road Leads Back To You/Reunion

Bruce Woodley, Athol Guy and Keith Potger, along with newcomer 23 year old Dutch-born Louisa Wisseling (a semi-professional folk singer formerly with Melbourne band The Settlers) ressurected the Seekers. In a February 1975 newspaper article about the group's reunion, Louisa revealed that Bruce had approached her at a 1974 Settlers concert at Ferntree Gully's Swagman Restaurant with an offer to join the group, and she originally turned him down. The new group recorded two albums and a number of singles, some of which, like "The Nimble Song" and "I Saw It All With Trans Tours" (both written by Woodley) reflected the boys' other careers in advertising. Woodley's composition "The Sparrow Song" became the group's biggest hit and remains to this day the highest-charting Seekers single written by a member of the group. Other tracks he contributed to this line-up included "Giving and Takin'" (the title track of their second album), "Can We Learn to Get Along" (which began life as a solo recording for the TV documentary series Shell's Australia, and was released by Bruce on flexi-disc), "Reunion", "Country Ros", "Standing on Shaky Ground" (featuring Bruce on vocals which he felt were too low for him, but were impossible for Louisa to sing for the same reason), and "The Rose and the Briar".In 1977 Bruce left the group and was replaced by Buddy England.

Marty Rhone - Denim & Lace

You Can't Have Me/Star Song/Only If You Want Me/Move On Me/Take Away/Celebratin'/Denim And Lace/Little Miss Demeanour/Playing Your Game/Instant Coffee, Instant Tea/It's No Good/They Made It Rock

Out of his battle greens in 1972, Marty enrolled at the Conservatorium of Music on a government grant for a two-year period and then turned his attention toward acting, where he worked both live theatre (Godspell) and on television (Number 96 and The Class Of '75).

Then in August 1975, Marty's dues-paying came to an end when he signed to the M7 label and burst into the charts with "Denim And Lace", which became the year's second biggest selling single, and spent thirty-five weeks in the charts.

Within two years Marty had notched up three more hits - "Star Song", "I'm On The Loose Again" and the funky "Mean Pair Of Jeans". Marty went on to represent Australia at the 1976 Australian Popular Song Festival, performing a song composed by Brian Dawe and Steve Groves entitled "I'm On The Loose Again". It became the winning entry and from there they took it to the World Contest at Tokyo, where they took out two major awards - 'Best Song' and 'Most Outstanding Performance'.

By the end of the 70's, Marty was in London performing on stage alongside Yul Brynner in the production of 'The King And I'.

Today, Marty still remains a respected actor/entertainer, whose early work is long overdue proper attention.

Marty Rhone & The Soul Agents - Village Tapestry

Nature Boy/Thirteen Women/Village Tapestry/I Want You Back Again/She Is Mine/No No No No/What More Can I Do/I Can Tell/Every Minute Of You/Tell Me Love/Lonely Too Long/Green Mansions/She's Coming Home/Hurry Poor Working Man/As The Sun Goes Down/So You Want To Be A Pop Singer

Marty was born Carl Van Rhoon, on 7 May 1948. Of Dutch-Indonesian ancestry, he started singing at an early age and at 17 went straight from school to a professional singing career.

In late 1965 Marty and his band The Blue Feelings went to the Channel 9 studios to audition for their television pop show, SATURDAY DATE. However, it actually turned out to be, on the sly, an audition for a new record company called Spin Records, which was run by Nat Kipner (the father of Steve Kipner of Steve & the Board). Nat liked Marty, but not the band, and as a result Marty signed with the label as a solo act.

The Soul Agents were a respected Sydney band comprising: John Green (guitar) – Barry Kelly (keyboards) – Gerry Dean (bass) and Roger Felice (drums), all musicians of varied background. Nat Kipner had seen The Soul Agents performing at a Sydney club and was very impressed with the band, so in January 1966 Marty Rhone and The Soul Agents joined forces and became part of the Spin roster along with Steve & The Board, the Bee Gees, Jeff St. John & The Id, Tony Barber, The Dave Miller Set and Ronnie Burns.

The next twelve months was a hectic schedule taken up with recording, touring and television appearances. The first single, “Nature Boy”, was released on the Spin Label in 1966, followed by “Thirteen Women”, “I Want You Back Again”, “She Is Mine” and Marty’s own composition entitled: “Village Tapestry” – (the Bee Gees did guest backing vocals on both ‘She Is Mine’ & ‘Village Tapestry’). "Village Tapestry" is now considered a minor classic and has since been critically recognised as being way ahead of its time.

There were many highlights in their touring schedule including Marty’s support to The Rolling Stones on their 1966 Australian tour and performing at Sydney Stadium on the P.J.Proby Show with Wayne Fontana, Eden Kane and The Bee Gees. This show was also the first appearance of Marty Van Wyk on lead guitar, who had just left The Throb and replaced John Green as lead guitarist with The Soul Agents.

With all the single releases, chart success eluded Marty and the Soul Agents, even with such a compelling original track as “Village Tapestry”.

In 1967, The Soul Agents took on a full-time residency performing at one of Sydney’s biggest Nightclubs, and Marty moved to Melbourne where he continued to do television and personal appearances and remained there until early 1970 when he was conscripted into the army for a two-year period.

Seekers - 1976 - Giving And Taking

Friends/The Rose and the Briar/Giving and Taking/A Part of You/Country Lanes/Country Rose/Holding On/If I Could Write a Fairy Tale/A Finer Country Day/Standing on Shaky Ground/Where in the World

Around 1972 Bruce Woodley,Keith Potger and Athol Guy began planning a new version of the of the Seekers and they were looking for a replacement for Judith Durham, friend Buddy England suggested Louisa Wisseling and so Seekers II were born . Against the odds, the Seekers jumped straight back into the Australian charts with Woodley's "Sparrow Song" #2 in June 1975 and the album The Seekers #17 in July (Can be found on the Midoztouch Forum). In September 1975, they undertook a national tour and released three subsequent singles: "Reunion" (October), "Where in the World?" (April 1976) and "Giving and Taking" (June '76)."Giving and Taking" was lifted from the album of the same name.
Bruce Woodley left in June 1977 to concentrate on songwriting and production, at which point Buddy took over, remaining with them until the group split again. Athol quit in 1978, replaced by another veteran of the Melbourne '60s scene, Peter Robinson (ex The Thunderbirds, The Strangers). This version of The Seekers released one album, "All Over the World" in November 1978, then in 1980 they released " A Little Bit of Country" (you can find this on Midoztouch as well) with Cheryl Webb replacing Wisseling they continued performing in Australia and overseas until 1981 when they called it a day once again. They would reform again of and on right up until the present.

The album "Giving and Taking" is quite a good album from the opening track "Friends" to the closing "Where in the World" every song a winner while Louisa Wisseling is no Judith Durham she is a fine replacement. My faves are "The Rose And The Briar", "Country Lanes",
"Country Rose" and "Standing On Shaky Ground". Most of the songs were written by Bruce Woodley or co-written by Bruce and John Farrar former member of the Strangers and one time Shadow. There is also a song there from the brothers Gibb and one by Keith Potger.

Those that have requested reposts because of dead links just be patient I am still working on the artwork for the Seekers album before this one where Louisa Wisseling makes her first appearance as a Seeker so that shouldn't be too long and the Peter Nelson and the Castaways that I had posted very early on sounded terrible so I'm Re-ripping it before posting. In the meantime I'm reposting this one as the links were dead.

Jay Justin - Proud Of You

Proud Of You/Love Me Love Me Baby Darling

It's almost 48 years since 'Proud of You' first hit the charts on its way to a national Number 1. Jay was unusual in that he actually wrote his own songs, as well as writing or helping to write hits for others. A school girl named Patricia Amphlett was one of his discoveries. At the age of 13, she'd appeared on the TV show, 'Opportunity Knocks' but her career really took off when Jay saw her performing at the Bronte Surf Club and introduced her to EMI records. He and EMI producer Joe Halford wrote the 2 songs which would be Little Pattie's first single release - 'He's My Blonde-Headed Stompie-Wompie Real Gone Surfer Boy' on the A-side and 'Stompin' at Maroubra' on the B-side.

Jay had a number of other hits himself, including 'Reminiscing', played the Devil in a panto featuring a number of Australian rock stars and represented Australia at the World Song festival in Rio. While he hasn't appeared on the charts for many years, he's continued to record and perform and is working on a new album right now. He's good mates with several other performers who became famous in the 60's such as Frank Ifield, John Rowles and Lucky Starr.

Peter Andre - Mysterious Girl

Mysterious Girl/Mysterious Girl (Malibu Edit)/Mysterious Girl (Extended Mix)/Mysterious Girl (Instrumental)Peter

James Andrea (born 27 February 1973), better known by the stage name Peter Andre, is a British-Australian musician. Andre is best known for his hit singles "Mysterious Girl" and "Flava". He was the husband of glamour model and business women Katie Price, with whom he had three children.

In 2009, he made a successful musical comeback after the release of his 2006 album with his then wife, Katie, A Whole New World. In 2009, he released his first album in four years, Revelation with a new single "Behind Closed Doors" which reached #3 on the UK Singles Charts. The Revelation album features a more darker side of lyrics to his previous material. This was followed by Accelerate in 2010.

"Mysterious Girl" is the second overall single and third British single from singer-songwriter Peter Andre's second studio album, Natural. The song was written by Glen Goldsmith, Philip Jackson and Peter Andre, and produced by Ollie Jacobs. The song features guest vocals from Bubbler Ranx. The song was first released as a single by Melodian Records in Australia in September 1995, however, it was not released until May 1996 in the United Kingdom due to problems regarding the administration of Andre's British record label, Mushroom Records. It reached the top of the charts in New Zealand and number eight in Australia, and peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart.

Herbie Marks - Herbie's Boogie

Herbie's Boogie/Last Tango In Paris

Really hard to find out anything about this guy hard to find out to much specific about him but he seems to get around with small mentions of him playing with someone or another backing people like Lionel Long and Tina Lawton to name but a few on recordings. Herbie plays the piano and the piano accordion and has released a number of albums among them "The Magic Accordion of Herbie Marks: Down Mexico Way" 1965 "Theme From Last tango In Paris" 1973 "Here Comes D'Boogie Man" 1973 "An Echanted Evening With" and as The Herbie Marks Trio "Fiddler On The Roof".

Dennis O'Brien - Any Other Face In The Rain

Any Other Face In The Rain/She Won't Dance

David O'Brien was a Kiwi musician who went to the UK in 1971 to try his hand at the big time he said a the time he wanted to be the first musician from New Zealand to make it to #1 in the UK. He returned there again in 1973 to have another crack at it and stayed for 5 years this time and was starting to make a name for himself when along came Punk which virtually sunk any hope he had at success. He made an appearance at Knebworth 1978 but was slotted in on the Friday night when most of the punk bands appeared and was booed of the stage.

As this single was released in 1978 on "Ode" a New Zealand label I assume he must have returned to New Zealand soon after. Side 1 of the single has a funky feel about it, while side 2 is straight out late 70's pop. David Released 3 albums 1 in the UK and 2 at home in New Zealand. David now lives in New Zealand and runs Slow Boat Records.

Maria Dallas - The Best Of Maria Dallas

I'm Looking Over A Four Leaf Clover/Queen Of The House/Rustle Your Bustle/ I Don't Have A Penny/Engine Engine No. 9/Hey Good Lookin'/The Music Turns Me On/You Can't Roller Skate In A Buffalo Herd/England Swings/So Long Lucy/When I Get Through With You/Changing All Those Changes/Balling The Jack/Tumblin' Down

Had a request for some Maria Dallas and thanks to RAM i'm able to post these 2 fine albums

Maria Dallas (born Marina Devcich or Marina Devčić, between of the 1940s and 1950s) was discovered at a talent contest in small town Morrinsville, New Zealand. Her first single "Tumblin' Down", written by Jay Epae, released in 1966 and made it to #11 in the charts. It also won her a Loxene Golden Disk Award. She released several albums and singles before moving on to Australia in 1967 and then to Nashville. She returned to New Zealand in 1970 and scored a #1 hit with the song "Pinocchio"

For a time in the mid-sixties life was a fairytale come true for a young woman from Morrinsville named Marina Devcich. One minute there she was the second youngest of twelve children working as a hairdresser in her home town. Eighteen months later she had won the Loxene Golden Disc Award with her first record, and had just returned from four months in the USA, recording with Chet Atkins and appearing on the Grand Ole Opry.

It all started in 1964 when Marina and Isabel Leigh won a Johnny Cooper talent quest in Morrinsville. Further solo performances with the Lew Manson Band around the Waikato area followed. One night in 1965 she was booked to appear in a Morrinsville hotel with Howard Morrison and Auckland bandleader Mike Perjanik. Mike went straight back to Auckland to tell Viking Records' chief Ron Dalton that he'd found his next star in the Waikato. Almost overnight the girl with the power packed voice was in an Auckland recording studio, recording Jay Epae's "Tumblin' Down". Ron Dalton decided to rename her Maria Dallas.

"Tumblin' Down" backed with "When I Get Through With You" was a very infectious number. Released in 1966, the song made it to number 11 on the national charts and was entered into the Loxene Golden Disc Awards, where it took first place. Despite this success, Maria never felt at home as a pop singer and soon returned to her country music roots.

Viking churned out six albums during 1966 and 1967, and a similar number of singles. None of the singles faired as well as the first.

Later in 1967 she moved to Australia, before venturing to Nashville, where she did a considerable amount of recording. Although singles were still released during her absence, New Zealanders had almost forgotten about her until she returned in 1970 with a song called "Pinocchio" which went all the way to number 1 on the national charts.

Again she couldn't reproduce her success after that, but Viking capitalised by releasing another album in 1971 and a follow up in 1972.

Maria married an Australian and has lived there for many years.

Custard - Apartment

Apartment/Roadside/Streetwaves

Custard are an Australian indie rock band from Brisbane formed in 1990.

The band were originally known as Custard Gun and featured David McCormack on vocals and guitar, Paul Medew on bass, James Straker (later in The Melniks) on guitar and Shane Brunn (who later formed Hugbubble and Vanlustbader) on drums. After a few shows and line up changes (namely James being replaced by Matthew Strong) Custard Gun morphed into Custard. Custard existed for about a decade (albeit with revolving line up of drummers - Gavin Herrenberg, Danny Plant, Glenn Thompson et al.). The band released five albums (Buttercup/Bedford, Wahooti Fandango, Wisenheimer, We Have the Technology and Loverama), two EPs (Gastanked and Brisbane) a 7" single ("Rockfish Anna"), various CD singles, two compilations of re-issued and rare material (Wacked Not Wacky and Brisbane 1990-1994) and a posthumous greatest hits compilation entitled Goodbye Cruel World. During their heyday they were a popular live act, appearing prominently for several years in the Triple J Hottest 100.
