Kamahl - Faith of Our Fathers

The internationally acclaimed singer Kamahl has recorded a CD of best loved Catholic hymns and songs of inspiration especially for The Catholic Weekly. The 20-track CD, Faith of Our Fathers, includes favourites both old and new and will not only entertain and inspire listeners; sales of the album will assist the needy through the St Vincent de Paul Society. Kamahl regards the CD as one of the highlights of his 40-year-plus recording and stage career. The album includes hymns such as Faith of Our Fathers, Soul of My Saviour, Hail, Queen of Heaven, Panis Angelicus, Ave Maria, On Eagles’ Wings, Prayer of St Francis, Christ be Our Light and Sweet Sacrament Divine. The singer became involved with The Catholic Weekly after he performed at the paper’s Big Variety Show at the Sydney Town Hall last year in aid of Vinnies’ Christmas Appeal. After discussions with editor Kerry Myers and marketing manager Trevor Kenneally, Kamahl agreed to record an album of traditional Catholic hymns, some of which are rarely heard in our churches today. The multi-award winning entertainer became more and more enthusiastic as the project developed and regards his renditions of these popular devotional pieces as some of his best work. “After singing about love and romance for more than 40 years I relished the chance to record these beautiful hymns and songs of faith and inspiration,” he said. “I am very happy with the outcome and I hope I have done justice to the beautiful sentiments expressed in these hymns.” The CD will be on sale in time for Christmas at St Vincent de Paul Society stores throughout the State. It is also available through The Catholic Weekly and its online gift shop www.catholicgiftshop.com.au CW editor Kerry Myers said he was delighted that a singer of the calibre of Kamahl had agreed to record the album. “Faith of Our Fathers is a rare compilation of hymns and songs of inspiration that will appeal to everyone – young and old,” he said. “Each of us will have a favourite track that will be worth the price of the whole CD, so the collection itself is a treasure indeed. “I would like you to do what he asked of me before we released the album – just listen! That’s all you have to do to appreciate this beautiful collection from one of Australia’s greatest entertainers.” The acting president of Vinnies, Raymond James, said the CD will make an ideal Christmas gift, and proceeds will aid the society's Christmas Appeal. “Please know that while you have soul-quenching music by Kamahl, one of Australia’s best-loved entertainers in your home, you will also be supporting marginalised, excluded and disadvantaged individuals and families across Australia,” Mr James said. The CD is to be officially launched by Bishop David Cremin at the Lewisham headquarters of the St Vincent de Paul Society on December 7, at which Kamahl will perform. Bishop Cremin said he was pleased to commend Kamahl and The Catholic Weekly for the CD, praising the recordings as “heartfelt renditions by one of the most remarkable voices of the internationalstage”. “The hymns will not only add a touch of nostalgia for many but aid in the fostering of our devotions,” he said. “I pray, too, that the sale of the CD will further assist the work of the St Vincent de Paul Society.”
